This 270m2 double storey, four-bedroom/two-bathroom home is a superb example of what can be achieved on a narrow block. With a total site area of 460m2 (10m frontage by 46m depth) a considerable amount of design and planning was required in order to achieve the client’s brief.
We were asked to create a naturally light filled, zoned living environment where this young and busy family could live happily together, yet retreat to separate areas of the house to hold a quiet conversation or simply be alone when required.
In a twist on conventional design, we dedicated the entire upper floor as a parents’ retreat, with the three children’s bedrooms downstairs. The backyard has been separated into two separate living zones in their own right, with a pool and play area directly to the rear and a courtyard to the side. The galley style kitchen with its raked ceiling and northern highlight windows overlooks the courtyard and is simply stunning.
With energy efficiency also high on the priority list, we made use of several passive design techniques including minimising western and eastern glazing while maximising northern glazing onto the living areas. Insulation was increased throughout and the use of sustainable materials where possible was accommodated by using reclaimed red bricks as feature walls to the kitchen and living room and solid bamboo flooring throughout.
